iPhone app launched at Cannes Film Festival by Cellhire

Cellhire, a global wireless solutions specialist, has developed a unique iPhone application for Marché du Film, the organization behind the Cannes Film Festival.

Jérôme Paillard, Executive Director of Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes commented “Cellhire has developed a wonderful iPhone app that is quick, clear and makes great use of the iPhone user interface. It’s made a big impact at Cannes this year and will help us bring the power of the Cinando database to our users at film festivals throughout the year”.

The app provides on-the-move access to the Cinando cinema industry database for film professionals. The home page always shows the next available screenings at the current event (Cannes 2010) and provides a single click way to search for people, companies, films and listings. Attendees at the current event are highlighted with their on-site contact information to make staying in touch at annual film events that much easier.

The Cinando iPhone application is available now to download at the iPhone app store.

Cinando is a database dedicated to cinema industry professionals with up-to-the minute details of companies, contacts, films and screening schedules. The Cinando website www.cinando.com attracts millions of views a year and Cellhire was asked to bring this online network to the iPhone. Cleverly, the app adapts throughout the year to pick up the current film event such as the Cannes Film Festival, Berlin EFM and Hong Kong Film Mart providing vital information on dates and screenings right on the home page. Although the Cinando application was initially designed for the Cannes Film Festival, it can be utilized throughout the year as a resource for all film industry professionals.

Tim Williams, Chief Executive of the Cellhire Group commented “Cellhire’s partnership with the Cannes Film Festival has continued to expand over the last 10 years from simply being a phone rental provider” he added “we are delighted that the delivery of this innovative new service was entrusted to us and to Cellhire’s in-house development team.”

Cellhire has provided communication solutions for numerous film events including the American Film Market, Sundance Film Festival, European Film Market and the Oscars as well as being the exclusive supplier to the Cannes Film Festival for twelve consecutive years.

The iPhone is a new addition to the Cellhire rental portfolio, combined with local French airtime, internet and SMS for Cannes. This solution offers free incoming calls and low national call rates throughout the duration of the event and comes with the Cinando application preloaded onto the handset. Helping small business get started

Heading off to a trade show from New York to Los Angeles presented some challenges for our client. There was no missing this event, way to much on the line. It was necessary to attend and as with most companies, minimizing costs was mandatory.

The challenge

Mr. Christenson came to us seeking a data card solution. Connectivity at the event and hotel was just way too expensive. He needed something only for a 4 day trip so signing up with his carrier was not really an option given the demand to purchase the card and a 2-year contract.

The solution

Cellhire answered with an US unlimited data bundle. At first, he was a bit concerned about his lack of technical expertise, “hope it’s not too complicated, I don’t have time to mess around”. Cellhire’s 24 hour technical support team was at the ready to get him going and as it turns out, it was simple enough that he didn’t have to make the call.

The results

He was able to stay connected to his network throughout the entire show, placing orders real time, sending product information at the time of the request and staying connected to his e-mail, all for a nominal one time rental fee.

Just dropped the card in the bag and the bag in the UPS box when he got home and all was well. A successful event with some cost savings that only improved those margins! Glad we could help!

Has Technology Outpaced Network Capacity

Unlimited data plans are coming to an end worldwide. AT&T got the ball rolling and O2 in the United Kingdom quickly followed. Verizon is looking to restructure their data plans as well and many other networks in the global market never offered it in the first place. As data intense devices continue to hit the market with all of their really cool capabilities and applications, we can certainly anticipate the other networks to follow in this trend.

We all know data usage has increased dramatically with the introduction of smart phones and great gadgets like the iPad. One can download music and videos, take advantage of GPS technology, participate in live webinars, Skype and send and receive digital high resolution pictures directly to your phone. These are intensive data users.

The iPhone in particular has proven to be a real ‘data hog’. iPhone users love their phones because of the full html email, enhanced internet features, streaming videos, quick music downloads and all those wonderful applications. And the more applications you load, the more data gets used with constant refreshing and updates.

International roaming with smart phones, especially the iPhone, is generating some huge bills for many users who fail to “bundle up” with their carrier before leaving the country. Many times, the bundle isn’t enough. One 5 megapixel picture sent or received via MMS or email can use 2-3MB of data. At international roaming rates without a bundle, that can cost as much as $40. Even a 3-4 minute video from YouTube or an iTunes song download can chew down on 5MB of data. At the last AT&T rate I saw of $0.0195 per KB that is going to be expensive. With 1024KBs in a single MB, that’s 5,120KBs. That song may have had a price tag of only $0.99, but it cost $99.84 to download on international roaming.

As the 4G network expands the smart phones will speed up. Apps continue to become bigger and better, so it stands to reason that data usage will increase astronomically. Networks are not only seeing dollar signs by implementing these tiers but are working to ensure they do not exceed their capacity to deliver. Unlimited data plans may soon be a thing of the past in the US and abroad. As consumers, we need to educate ourselves on how data works and what tools and devices use more data than others. We cannot continue to take the data used by these gadgets for granted.
