9 reasons to buy the Samsung Galaxy S9

Are you looking for an excuse to splash out on a new phone? Well, here are nine reasons why you should consider treating yourself to the new Samsung Galaxy S9…

width=

  1. Samsung Screen

The Samsung Galaxy S9’s screen is nothing short of genius. The curved glass wraps the display neatly around the sides of the phone, delivering the ‘Infinity display’. This, in combination with a clean aluminum frame, really gives the device a luxury quality.

In the 5.8-inch screen, the AMOLED panel depicts incredibly vibrant, bright and accurate colors. The S9 has a Quad HD+ (2,960 × 1,440 pixel) resolution, which means it’s actually sharper than its larger S9+ counterpart because it packs more pixels in (570 pixels-per-inch to be exact).

  1. New and improved Software

The curved display proves excellent not only when viewing stunning photographs, but also when viewed with the advancements in the S9’s software, especially with regards to watching TV and Gaming. The S9 supports HDR10, so apps like Netflix, YouTube, and HBO with HDR10 content look their absolute best on this phone and the Snapdragon 845 chip boasts bigger graphics improvements. Games run without a hitch and the phone doesn’t get too warm after you’ve been playing for a while.

The Snapdragon 845 also truly shines with fast performance across the board; whether you are playing graphic-intensive games or simultaneously using Multi Window and Android Oreo’s floating window for YouTube playback, the Galaxy S9 won’t fail to keep up. In summary, this is the fastest phone made by Samsung to date.

  1. Easy to handle

It’s really easy to get your hands on the S9. Thanks to the small and compact 5.8-inch display and smooth curved edges, the S9 is easy and comfortable to use in one hand. However, due to the elongated 18.5:9 aspect ratio, this device still offers a lot of screen to look at. The handling of this device is further improved by the conveniently placed power button on the right edge, Bixby button on the left edge and most importantly, the new location of the fingerprint sensor. Now, the fingerprint scanner and camera are setup vertically, as opposed to horizontally as we saw with the S8, making it easier to swipe the sensor and not the camera. But, if you prefer a ‘the bigger the better approach’ the S9 Plus is the phone for you.

For those who are used to older phones with physical controls, the pressure-sensitive virtual home button provides a familiar feeling; making the transition to on-screen keys feel more natural.

  1. Great Durability

The materials used to produce this phone are an improvement on those of the S8. The screen maintains the high resolution display using the bright and vibrant Super AMOLED panel. The upgrade is the use of Gorilla Glass 5; this is a big step forward in the device’s durability. This screen is more capable than its predecessor at enduring the knocks and drops of everyday life. In addition, the aluminium frame creates a more robust construction.

The device is also water and dust resistant; great for peace of mind if you enjoy the outdoors… or you’re clumsy! IP (Ingress Protection) is a universally accepted measure of dust and liquid resistance and with the S9 and S9+ having a rating of IP68, it’s safe to say your phone can be protected from adventurous conditions.

  1. Fantastic Photos and Super Slow Motion Video

The Plus offers a dual-camera system that has features such as 2x optical zoom and a Portrait Mode for a blurred background effect. The Live Focus and Selective Focus features are also superior on the S9+. However, these benefits come at a price.

Even though the S9 has one lens instead of two like the S9+, it sure does pack quite a punch. The killer single 12-megapixel camera with variable aperture takes stunning photographs. At f/1.5, the S9 features the widest aperture available on a smartphone currently; meaning it can absorb more light and produce high quality images. You can manually switch apertures in the camera’s Pro mode and the default aperture setting is generally f/2.4. But, when the camera detects low light, it will automatically switch to f/1.5 aperture (the lower the number the wider the aperture). This feature helps makes the S9’s camera superior in comparison to many other smartphones on the market today; its ability to capture noticeably brighter, high quality photographs.

The Super Slow motion video feature is remarkable with this phone. You can slow down a video clip to 960 frames per second at 720p resolution for 0.2 seconds; that’s 32 times slower than real life! The S9 camera lens will automatically detect action in a frame and will slow it down for you – simple! Alternatively, you could use the manual mode to do it yourself. The most exciting part about this feature is the variety of things you can do with the video after it’s been shot. You can loop the clip, swing it back and forth or reverse it.

  1. Intelligent scan

The S9 offers a triple threat of identity authentication; iris scanning, facial recognition and fingerprint sensor. The new improvements in this feature are the relocation of the finger scanner and the introduction of ‘Intelligent scan’. Now, facial and iris scanning are combined, so if one fails the S9 will simply default to the other saving you the trouble of having to start again!

  1. Make it your own!

The S9 has done a stellar job in creating an attractive array of glossy colours and hues for you to choose from. Midnight Black, Coral Blue and Lilac Purple are stand-out and will have you admiring your phone more than you realise possible.

If these colours aren’t enough for you, the S9’s customisation options for graphics and layouts are endless and allow for true personalisation. From the size of your apps to the font and colour of the time icon, you can add your artistic flare to every aspect of this phone.

  1. Bonus features

This phone will make your life easier – wave goodbye to the burden of iPhone dongles… the S9 has a headphone jack! The S9 has also developed to cater to those who prefer to listen to music out loud with the new stereo sound speaker. The top earpiece works with the speaker at the bottom of the device, AKG-tuned, Dolby Atmos audio is said to be 1.4 times louder than the S8. Music is easily room-filling, with a rich and clear sound and when you watch Atmos-optimized content, the audio seems to physically surround you.

  1. Won’t burn a hole in your pocket

At £739 and £869, the devices save you around £200 when compared to their closest rival – the iPhone X! With interesting software, design and a superior camera, it’s fair to say that you get your money’s worth with this phone.

What’s all the fuss about VoLTE and WiFi Calling?

VoLTE:

Although it sounds complicated, VoLTE is simply ‘voice calls over 4G LTE network’ and 4G LTE is today’s fastest connection available for wireless networks. 4G means fourth generation of data technology for cellular networks (following 3G, third generation). LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution, a technical process for high-speed data for phones and other mobile devices. Combined, 4G and LTE create the fastest and highest quality connection available with the ability to download up to 100 megabits per second –very speedy! Read on to find out more details about how VoLTE works and what the benefits are…

  1. Superior quality – easier to hear and be heard on calls.

The quality of voice calls transmitted over VoLTE is a big improvement on what we have heard previously. The connection captures sound waves twice as fast as other calls and by using a wider range of frequencies, its able to better match the range of pitch and tone in human speech. This allows for much more data to be transferred; three times more than 3G and five times more than 2G, creating a HD rich experience.

The HD voice also reduces background noise, so that, even on the busiest of streets the background noise is kept to a minimum, which makes the person’s voice ‘crystal-clear’, as if you are talking face-to-face.

  1. Improved coverage and connectivity – faster and further reaching

VoLTE connects twice as fast and has a much greater range of coverage. This is largely down to the fact that 2G and 3G connections are still available when there isn’t a 4G connection available. Without the other connections, it is not always possible to make and receive calls; an issue that standard 4G users should be aware of (due to the varying frequencies).

VoLTE is dependent on networks, making it very far reaching. It is estimated that the 4G network will cover 95% of the UK by 2020 – excellent news for anyone with a 4G network, especially for those looking to upgrade to  4G LTE.

  1. Faster speeds – multi-task with ease and speed

Due to the new ability to use data and mobile networks simultaneously, you can multi-task with apps and phone calls at a faster pace than ever. Now, when you get lost, you can phone a friend AND use Maps… at the same time! Most importantly, you can do this without compromising the quality of connection of your voice call or the speed of your Maps application. A whole new meaning to hands free… free to navigate!

  1. Battery life – stay charged for longer

4G users could see an improvement in their battery life. Making calls on 4G requires a lot of switching of networks; on a call 4G has to switch to 2G or 3G and then back to 4G once the call had ended. This process of switching drains an excessive amount of battery. The VoLTE system is much more efficient in comparison – ideal for when you’re on the move and need to stay connected!

  1. New and improved features – video calling and much more…

It’s never been easier to video call! When you have VoLTE you’re able to video call over mobile number (rather than through apps like facetime or skype). This means you can video call and receive video calls from anyone with any device (even between IPhone and Android) as long as they also  have VoLTE, just as you would with a voice call.

There are also many new ideas and possibilities in the works for VoLTE. Just as video phone calls could become the ‘norm’, other new rituals may grow native to the dialler e.g. Rich Communication Services (or RCS’s) such as file transferring, real time language translation and video voicemail (as well as ideas for applications which haven’t even been conceived yet).

Wi-Fi Calling is a little different…

Not having signal is not an issue when you have Wi-Fi calling. Like VoLTE relies on having mobile signal, Wi-Fi Calling relies on being connected to Wi-Fi hotspot (wireless internet network) and having a compatible device.

The Benefits – simple and convenient

Once you have the latest Wi-Fi Calling software – it’s simple! You can call, text, and send picture messages just as normal whenever you see the Wi-Fi indicator in the top left of your screen. So in environments that rarely have mobile signal, such as a rural location or a basement flat, on the London Underground or inside an old building with thick walls, you can still make quality calls over the Wi-Fi network.

With Wi-Fi and 4G Calling, you’ll automatically switch seamlessly and uninterrupted between Wi-Fi Calling and 4G network coverage (whichever has the strongest connection) to continue your call on the move. However, it’s only available on particular devices and networks, so just contact your network provider to find out if you’re eligible to upgrade.

What is 5G, how can it be used and why do you need it?

5G to those inexperienced in the technology field refers to fifth generation mobile networks and is essentially a development upon the previous mobile network generation. With that in mind and many new features and benefits promised with the introduction of 5G, it is no surprise that the launch is eagerly anticipated! Therefore this blogpost has been carefully designed to provide you with essential details surrounding 5G, ranging from its release date to how it could benefit you.

When will 5G become available?

The 5G networks are already in the testing phase of their development and it is expected that the earliest 5G ready smartphones could enter the market later in 2018, with 5G becoming more widespread in spring 2019. With that said it could be just 9 months before 5G becomes readily available for you (too long to wait, we know!).  The US as a nation is lucky enough to be one of the opening beneficiaries of 5G, alongside other countries such as China, Japan and South Korea- hopefully that makes the long and anxious wait for 5G that little bit easier!

What speeds will 5G offer its users?

Consumers lucky enough to access 5G in the near future will be able to take advantage of significantly increased speeds than those offered by the predecessor 4G. Users currently operating a device equipped with 4G connections can benefit from theoretical network speeds of up to 300Mbps on an advanced 4G LTE Network (is it really that slow?), whereas 5G will provide smartphone users with download speeds potentially over 100 times as fast (we are being serious, I promise!). Such speedy connections will facilitate the connection of multiple Internet of Things solutions such as Smart Receptions and Buildings. For those enjoying leisure and free time, the transition to the 5G Network will also be beneficial for streaming video content- almost eliminating the inconvenient stresses of buffering and lag time.

Broadband Solutions

Tired of unreliable broadband or WiFi connections in your home? Are you forever waiting for files to download or emails to send? You could be in luck, 5G is sure to form a welcome addition into your life! The introduction of 5G into the market is being heavily tipped as an eventual replacement service for your current home internet service- could this be the answer to all your internet speed problems? The honest answer is yes, but you could have to wait a while longer (quite a while longer!) with progress on this development very much in the trial stage, although both AT&T and Verizon having invested heavily into this.

What can 5G achieve?

It is suspected 5G will be pivotal to achieving a wide range of technological enhancements, with uses ranging from practicalities to leisure activities. One leisure activity in particular where 5G can be used to improve the overall user experience is that of Virtual Reality or VR for short. Virtual Reality is a concept that has been developing continually for a number of years, however it is alleged that with the introduction of a 5G network, users of VR will be able to benefit from access to live chats in real worlds- indicating further advancements in VR. On a level of practicality, 5G can be used to enhance the functionality of self-driving cars. Once launched 5G is suspected to speed up the development of self-driving cars, with each vehicle being equipped with sensors- facilitating communication with other vehicles and also the ability to track location. With that said 5G provides the perfect opportunity to avoid that awkward conversation with a taxi driver!

Alter your Data Plan!

Whilst it is apparent 5G will bring a wide range of advantages to those fortunate enough to access it, it will be a heavy form of data consumption (don’t say we didn’t warn you!). It is foreseen that the benefits associated with 5G will mean that the fifth generation of mobile networks will be nothing short of a data guzzler! People who regularly use up or exceed their current data plan, would consume their entire month’s data allowance in under a week, should they use 5G to the same extent and with the same sized data bundle- you have been warned!  5G is incoming, it’s time to start saving!

Upgrade your Phone!

In order to have access to a 5G connection, you will be required to upgrade to a device that is capable of supporting 5G. It is heavily anticipated that most devices launched and available for sale/rental from 2019 will be compatible with 5G, therefore by the time 5G becomes widespread, identifying a device capable of supporting 5G will be straightforward. Whilst having to upgrade to a new device may involve higher financial implications, the benefits of using 5G will definitely make your investment worthwhile- just think of those download speeds!

How to block a number from your iPhone

With the internet, use of smartphones and technology largely a good thing, providing mostly good results (mostly), their use throughout society has grown astronomically! But with that said, there has been the unwanted side effect of a rise in the number spam and prank calls. With this becoming a growing issue, the process of blocking such numbers is a question on the minds of many individuals. Therefore knowing how to avoid these tiresome and frustrating issues in the future, is of great importance.  A common option to prevent spam callers or contacts, is to ring up your network provider and ask them to block certain numbers. However, this is a task that can prove particularly time consuming. The following guide provides a hassle free, manual approach to block numbers from your iPhone, through either Phone, Facetime or Messages whilst only requiring a small amount of your time.  The guide will also elaborate on managing blocked numbers.

Phone App: Blocking numbers from the within the Phone App is a straightforward and simplistic process. Firstly open the Phone App by pressing the green phone icon, as though you were about to make a call or open the contact list. Having completed this, the next step is to open Recents before identifying the appropriate number. Once you have identified the number you wish to block, select the i icon next to your chosen phone number- scrolling down to the bottom of the screen, the final option is entitled Block this Caller. Told you it was straightforward (we weren’t lying!).

FaceTime App: The development and advancement over time has seen the creation of the video calling app FaceTime which has seen a massive increase in popularity. But this isn’t to say you won’t need to block a contact on FaceTime- we all have that one annoying friend! To block a contact through FaceTime, the first step is to ensure the FaceTime app is open (obvious yes, but we wouldn’t want you to forget!). After completing this, tap your FaceTime contacts, before pressing the i icon next to the contact/number you wish to block. Lastly scroll down the screen until you reach Block this Caller.

Messages App: Is it that annoying friend striking again? Or just another advertisement? Constant spam through in message form is particularly irritating and can soon become tiresome- not to worry you can block these numbers at the switch of a button (or 4!). Firstly open the Settings icon, before scrolling down to click Messages. Once you have identified the messages option, tap the Blocked option- this will present you with the option of Add New, select this to type in the number which you would like to block. There you have it the switch of four buttons!

Unblocking Numbers/Managing Contacts: For those thinking it was strange that we suggested blocking the number of just an annoying friend (I’m sure many of you were!). So to avoid any unnecessary awkwardness, numbers can be unblocked just as easily as the blocking process. Following a four step procedure almost identical to that of blocking a number through the Message app, a number can be unblocked simply and quickly. To start this procedure tap the Settings icon, having opened this, the next step is to select Messages. From here tap the Blocked option (this is starting to sound very familiar!). After having completed these three steps, it’s time for the actual unblocking of the number, to do this Swipe Left over the number.

Where to enjoy the Holiday Season in Europe

With the holiday season slowly but surely arriving and the long wind down to the big day itself beginning to unfold, we can be forgiven for looking for an escape destination to enjoy the holiday season in, whilst traveling the globe. This blog post aims to find you the perfect European getaway during the Holiday Season, combining fun, entertainment and relaxation- and of course Christmas refreshments and plenty of them!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Want to sample a traditional German Christmas Market in a traditional German town with idyllic surroundings? It’s time to visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber! Located in the heart of Bavaria, Rothenburg ob der Tauber houses a traditional German Market set in the backdrop of the City Hall and a Church (or Kirche as it is known locally!), these quaint surroundings make for the perfect photo opportunity so remember your camera! Whilst the Christmas Market itself, isn’t as large scale as other German Markets in the seemingly far larger cities of Munich or Cologne- Rothenburg ob der Tauber still provides still provides all the usual Christmas Market festivities. What’s more it does so without the strenuous long distance walk from one end to the other- leaving more time for eating and drinking, how considerate! Rothenburg ob der Tauber, (that’s becoming quite repetitive, we’ll call it Rothenburg for short!), Rothenburg, has a history dating back to the medieval period- with many medieval buildings and features remaining untouched and well preserved! So having refueled your energy with many festive delights, take a leisurely stroll around the town walls and the iconic defense tower. Or for the reminiscent individuals amongst you, follow in the footsteps of Dick Van Dyke and explore the fictional ‘Vulgaria’ setting seen during the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film! With such variety offered in Rothenburg, there really is something for everyone!

Manchester, United Kingdom: Whilst not as widely exposed and recognised as many of their mainland European counterparts many of the UK’s Christmas Markets often fall under the radar by comparison. Located in the North West of England, Manchester is home to the UK’s first wide scale Christmas Market opening in 1999. Eighteen years on and the Manchester Christmas Markets now house more than 300 stalls ranging from art and crafts to clothing and jewelry outlets to global and local food stalls. Additionally, the Christmas Markets are well connected to Manchester’s extensive transport network, with St Peter’s Square tram stop located within close proximity- meaning visitors can enjoy a few Steins or a glass or two of Gluhwein. But remember, as the famous saying goes, don’t drink and drive! Aside from the Christmas Markets, a trip to Manchester wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the cities football obsessed culture; the city is home to the world famous football club, Manchester United. The three times European Champions, offer Stadium experiences and tours at their home ground, Old Trafford, throughout the week. But if you’re lucky enough to be in Manchester on a matchday- it would be rude not to take in a match! Additionally if you’re looking to sample some Mancunian history, head to the Lowry, which alongside two theatres houses a range of galleries including the works of its namesake L.S. Lowry, whose matchstick paintings depicted working class life in Manchester throughout the 20th century.

Lapland, Finland: Somewhat a given at Christmas time! Release your inner child (we’ve all got one!), indulge in Christmas spirit and relive forgone Christmas memories of yore! Lapland provides the opportunity for you to visit Father Christmas (and yes it is the real one!) in his humble abode, providing children and adults alike a first rate, non-comparable Christmas experience. If you’re traveling with young children visiting Lapland’s Santa experience is a must, with the minds of 4-8 year olds at the peak of encapsulating enchantment! But it would be incredibly naïve to think visiting  Santa is Lapland’s main offering- admittedly I did at first glance, so I guess you could be forgiven! The Scandinavian destination also offers plenty for the adrenalin junkies out there, why not try your hand at Snowmobiling through mile after mile of snow passages deep in the woodland. Or why not experience a bit of local culture whilst still releasing that adrenalin, enjoy a husky sled ride through similar routes! Whichever activity you chose or whether you opt for both, Lapland provides visitors with multiple wind down options, from enjoying a drink or three in the ICEBAR, to catching a well-earned 40 winks in the ICEHOTEL- Lapland has got covered and caters for people of all ages and interests!

Copenhagen, Denmark: A visit to the Danish capital is a must during the Holiday Season with no festive trimming spared. The Tivoli Gardens in the city centre are adorned with a spectacular array of Christmas lights and thousands of Christmas trees pave the way around the Christmas Market with over 60 stalls. Each of which provide plenty of Christmas treats- so you can return home with gifts and delicacies, to ensure those who missed out on a trip to Copenhagen aren’t too jealous. Tivoli Gardens also caters for the thrill seekers, housing an amusement park with 27 attractions. Although for those enjoying the rides after the Christmas Markets, it might be wise to take it easy on the Christmas treats before braving the Spinning Top! Despite Tivoli Gardens bringing multitudes of Christmas entertainment, this is merely the beginning for Copenhagen’s Holiday Season offerings! Located on Copenhagen’s harbour side Nyhavn, renowned for its vast array of colorful buildings also transforms into an all things Christmas area during the Winter season. Whilst Nyhavn provides your usual Christmas Market attractions and offerings, the district goes one step beyond allowing you to meet and interact with animals- including the former Carlsberg Brewery Horses and the namely Nyhavn Pixies (they’re actually Ponies!). Denmark as a nation is world renowned for its pastries, for those of you with a sweet tooth or those looking to indulge in Danish cuisine whilst visiting Copenhagen- you’ll be pleased to know you’re never too far away from the scent of pastry or a bakery. With that said, you won’t need reminding (but here’s a reminder just in case), make sure you sample some traditional Danish pastry during your stay!

How to set up an iPhone: The Seven Step Guide

Smartphones and more specifically iPhone’s are rapidly becoming part of people’s everyday life. With many people unable to function without them, they are an essential tool in both working and social life’s of almost every modern day individual- although there is nothing wrong with a face to face conversation (every now and then!).  With the clear importance of the iPhone highlighted, the following  Seven Step guide , aims to walk you through setting up your device- after all you can’t use a phone without setting it up, can you?

1) Turn on your device: The first step on the ladder to set up your iPhone is (need we say it, we probably should!) is to turn on your device. This step is achieved by pressing the button at the top of your phone on the right hand side. Whilst a simple and straightforward step, this is the most important stage in the set up process and kick starts your setting up process.

2) Internet Access: Following on from this, you can now begin with the more technical side of the set up process. To set up your device, regardless of the generation or model you will need access to the internet. With that said, it is advised that if possible you connect the device to a WiFi connection. After all you wouldn’t want to eat into your monthly data plan before you can actually use your iPhone! Would you? Of course not, how else are you going to send selfies on the move?

3) Selecting a WiFi connection: You surely know how to connect to a WiFi by now don’t you? (we’ll tell you anyway!). Connecting to your chosen WiFi connection is a relatively straightforward procedure, with available WiFi connections within close proximity being easily located. These can be found by opening Settings  > WiFi, having opened the WiFi icon simply tap the network of your choice. You will often find a range of different WiFi connections listed as available with certain networks requiring you to enter the password before granting access.

4) Insert your SIM Card: Following this it is essential to ensure that you insert your SIM Card into the device before proceeding further (this might seem too obvious, believe us it’s not!). Firstly identify the hole on the SIM Card Tray, using the SIM eject tool readily provided in the box your phone arrived in pull out the SIM card tray. After having done this place your SIM Card on the top of the tray. It is paramount that the SIM Card is correctly aligned otherwise the Tray cannot be reinserted, with the said gently place the SIM Card tray back in its original location. Whoever said inserting a SIM Card was an obvious procedure!

5) Create Touch ID/Passcode: The next step you will be greeted with is the option to create a Touch ID or Passcode. The touch ID is the preferred option for the technologically curious, whilst some of us (myself included!) are still getting to grips with the Passcode side of things! Whilst neither option is mandatory, it is recommended as a security measure to prevent people accessing your personal contacts and information in a case of theft or loft (or the wandering eye of friends!). In terms of security, both options are relatively secure, that is assuming you’ve not opted for the Passcode ‘1234’- in which case there’s still time to change to a less obvious Passcode. With the Touch ID being Fingerprint based it is almost impossible for anyone else to access your device even with 7.6 billion people in the world!

6) Sign in/Create Apple ID: Once completing your Touch ID or Passcode, you will be asked to Sign in with your Apple ID. For existing users of iPhones or individuals who already have an Apple ID, this is merely a case of entering your Apple ID and typing your password before proceeding. However, those who are new to the concept of an Apple ID will need to create their own Apple ID before continuing- don’t worry, it’s not as scary as it sounds! The main function of an Apple ID is to facilitate the sign in process of Apple’s online services such as the App Store, iTunes, and iCloud. To create your Apple ID you need to provide your existing email address which is unrestricted and can be from any email provider. Told you it wasn’t too daunting!

7) Set up Siri/ other services: The final stage of your iPhone set up guide is designed to help you make the most of the features available to all iPhone users including email and location services- it is essential you enable location services for navigational purposes and if you are likely to use transport based apps such as Uber!
