What is Roaming?

Roaming is the ability to make and receive calls, use data, and generally use your phone as you would at home, whilst traveling overseas.

Why Roam?

Mobile networks are unable to follow you everywhere you go, and can only cover you in particular areas. Whilst abroad, you are outside your network operator’s coverage area, so roaming will occur by searching for other available networks to connect to.

How?

Most mobile networks have agreements with networks outside the country to help users use their phones abroad. These agreements allow users to ‘roam’. Once you leave the country and you lose your network coverage, your phone will automatically pick up another network once you arrive at your destination, meaning you’ll get to use your phone as usual. Automatic text messages are usually sent detailing roaming prices as soon as your phone recognizes you are in another country.

Roaming is Expensive

Connecting to other networks can be expensive. You will be charged extra for using your phone whilst abroad, whether it’s for connecting to the internet, making calls and even receiving text messages. Due to this, travelers often resort to turning roaming off, only using WiFi hotspots for when they want to be connected.

How to Avoid Roaming Charges

If you opt to switch your roaming off, you will only be able to connect to the internet through a WiFi connection. For a cheap and easy alternative, Cellhire offers both International and European Data SIMs, along with additional MiFi devices, so you need not worry about returning to expensive phone bills and can enjoy being connected, even whilst away.
